The History of the Penn-York Junior Golf League

The Penn-York Junior Golf League was founded in 1970 by the late
Dr. Robert Davis a former Olean resident and Bartlett Country Club
member. His vision was to give young golfers the opportunity to
participate in a competitive tournament atmosphere at an affordable
price.

In 1975 Ed Forrest became director and ran the program for 31 years
through 2006 at which time he handed the reins to his son Kevin.  In
2009 John & Danae Forrest assumed leadership. In 2017 Kyle Henzel
took over as director of the league.

For the past 54 years an estimated 5,000 junior golfers walked the fairways
competing for divisional trophies and bragging rights. Many of these kids went
on to become involved in the business of golf through many different aspects
of the game.

The Penn-York is comprised of four divisions for boys and 3
divisions for girls based on age. The breakdown for boys is as
follows: Division I 16-18 years old, Division II 14 to 15 years, Division
III 12 to 13 years, and Division IV (modified) 8 to 11 years. The girls
divisions are Division I 14 – 18 years old, Division III 12 to 13 years,
Division IV (modified) 8 – 11 years. Divisions I and II  play 18 holes
from the men’s white tees.   Division III plays 9 holes from the
women’s red tees and Division IV  plays 9 holes from modified tees.

Trophies are awarded for first and second place finishes in each
division for boys and awarded for first place in each girls’ division.
The Davis Memorial Trophy is given to the player with the low 18-hole
stroke average. The top 10 low-stroke averages receive an invitation
to compete in the SWNY-NWPA Men’s Amateur and the low 16 will be
invited to the Betty Bergreen. Both events are match play and held at
Bartlett CC.

In 2011 the first annual Kevin Forrest Memorial trophy was awarded
to the golfer who best exhibited the following characteristics:  love for
the game of golf, integrity, good sportsmanship, enjoys the
camaraderie of the game and good-spirited competition, and
perseverance – that never give up attitude.
